Old business

  • María spoke about the chronological history of Chairs.
  • Decision-making regarding meetings: Committee will meet second Friday of the month, 9:30 am, Jerry Hammond location.

Publishing of the pamphlets

  • Unveiling of the pamphlet, spoke of the time frame it took to complete.
  • There are 529 copies. Determining how to distribute them. Columbus and Southwestern are the biggest school districts.  Westerville, Dublin, Hilliard, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Catholic Diocese should also get copies. Pull out 50 pamphlets that with cover letter would be used to get more donations for printing.
  • Elizabeth mentioned that we should find the purpose of where the books would be distributed: LEP students as a welcome pkge, new families, KG registration.
  • María suggested figuring out with each bilingual assistance the need of a book at each building.
  • Brandi will create a guideline to distribute the books and talking points.
  • First takers: Big Brothers Big Sisters – 40 books, Dublin City Schools – 50 books, Southwestern City Schools– 100 books, Catholic Diocese – 40 books, Hilliard City Schools– 20 books, Columbus City Schools – 100 books; 50 books pull out for sponsorship. Westerville City Schools – 20 books. One book distributed to those in attendance – 9. [Total # of books taken – 429.]
  • Regarding getting sponsorship for the books: María mentioned trying to connect with the ESL Consortium. They only meet 3 – 4 times/year. Apply for grants – Columbus Foundation, Bill Gates

New business

  • Organizations that are participating for Latino Leadership Awards in Dublin, April 20th.
  • Contact Donna to find out more information about the ESL Consortium. Try to present at one of their meetings to get financial support. (Dan Fleck)
  • Consolidate mission, vision and strategy based on past “Strategic Future plans” of the committee.
  • LEON website – updated information? And a space for the Education Committee to post the Committee’s mission, vision and strategy as well as the minutes. So that all those interested would have access.
